A scientific research achievement of our institute was published in Nature, a leading international scientific journal.

On April 5, Nature, a leading international scientific journal, published an online research paper entitled The Evolutionary History of vertebrate RNA viruses. Professor Chen Mian and Professor Liu Li are the co-authors and co-authors of the paper.

RNA viruses are a diverse group of viruses that can cause many distinct diseases in vertebrates, such as influenza, hepatitis C and Ebola virus, but up to now, most attention has been focused on RNA viruses in mammals and birds.

In this study, Professor Liu Li, Associate Professor Chen Qian and their research team collected 186 vertebrate specimens including amphioxus, amphibian frogs and reptilian snakes from China's land and various waters. Using macro-transcriptome technology, a pathogen screening system for screening various viruses was established, from which the virus detectors at the top international level were used. 214 new RNA viruses have been identified. Among these new viruses, there are not only new viruses that differ greatly from known RNA viruses, but also all known RNA viruses that can infect vertebrates, including humans. The newly discovered viruses fill in the gaps of Virology knowledge, overturn the existing system of virus classification rules, reveal the genetic evolution of RNA viruses, and provide a new basis for revealing the origin and evolution of life.

It is understood that the research results were completed under the leadership of Zhang Yongzhen, a researcher at the Institute of Infectious Diseases, China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and a part-time professor at Fudan University. Professor Liu Li's team has cooperated with Professor Zhang Yongzhen's team for nearly ten years, and participated in the whole research process and jointly trained postgraduates.

Professor Liu Li is currently vice-president and doctoral supervisor of Oceanographic College. In the field of scientific research, he has presided over and completed nearly 10 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Science and Technology Program of Guangdong Province. At present, he is presiding over one sub-project of the Ministry of Agriculture and one sub-project of the National Science and Technology Infrastructure Platform of the Ministry of Science and Technology. He publishes his studies publicly by the first author or by the author There are more than 30 academic papers, including more than 10 SCI papers and 1 invention patent. In terms of teaching, President Liu has long taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses such as Microbiology and Animal Biochemistry. He has rich experience in teaching. He has presided over one provincial teaching reform project, three school-level postgraduate and undergraduate teaching reform projects and published five teaching reform papers. He is the deputy editor of two national planning textbooks for the 11th Five-Year Plan of General Higher Education (Animal Biochemistry) and《 Animal Biochemistry Experiments) has been awarded the title of Excellent Teacher and Excellent Head Teacher of the College.

Associate Professor Chen Mian joined our college in 2016. He is now a tutor of master's degree students and engaged in marine biology research. In recent years, he has published more than 40 academic papers by the first author and correspondent author, presided over two projects of the National Fund and participated in the compilation of two volumes of fish monographs.

It is reported that the publication of this paper is the second time that Professor Chen Miao has published a research paper in Nature as the co-first author. Associate Professor Chen Miao published a research paper entitled Redefining the invertebrate RNA virosphere in Nature in 2016 as co-first author. This paper is also a revolutionary achievement under the chairmanship of Professor Zhang Yongzhen. 1445 new RNA viruses were found in invertebrates and the RNA viral circle of invertebrates was redefined.

Nature, Science and Cell are currently the top academic journals in the world. The number of articles published in each issue is limited. The articles published represent the most cutting-edge and top research results in related fields. According to statistics, as of early April, nearly 20 CNS articles were published by Chinese scientific research institutions in 2018. From the point of view of the research institutes that published CNS articles, they are basically well-known universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Sun Yat-sen University and the major institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Liu Li and Associate Professor Chen Miao's publication of the research results fully demonstrates the level and strength of our institute in scientific research.
